Everybody has a story and we want to hear yours. How did you come to affirm your AfroLatin@ identity? What has been the most difficult aspect of this process? How do you relate to others of the African diaspora?
"I feel we are one; there are no boundaries or countries that divide us. We are Black and we are fighting the same struggle perhaps in a different magnitude but Afrolatin@s in the US suffer from being marginalized by having lack of resources in our community just like other Latin@s of African Descent and the common denominator is the color of our skin."
AfroLatin@ Stories grew out of our oral history documentation project "AfroLatin@ Vistas" as part of our efforts to document the live history and experiences of AfroLatin@s in the context of the United States. AfroLatin@ Stories is about providing a space for the community to come together and share their untold stories, while documenting and preserving these voices of people of African descent. We hope that this project will transform these experiences into an action that will help to challenge the rigid notions of race that exist in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean while striving for social justice and the recognition of these communities.
