It delves into larger topics such as Latino anti-Blackness and the daily lived experiences of AfroLatines in the United States. The series can be booked as a whole or as individual workshops. Introduction to AfroLatinidad

“Introduction to AfroLatinidad” is an interactive workshop that utilizes the afrolatin@ forum’s video/media library and research from The Afro-Latin@ Reader: History and Culture in the United States. Workshop participants are introduced to the identity of AfroLatinidad by discussing issues of visibility and anti-Blackness within the Latin@ community including ways in which these matters can be overcome. The workshop further challenges participants to rethink their understanding of AfroLatinidad more diverse understanding that includes and centers Blackness as an expression of Latin@ identity.

Daily Lived Experience

This workshop uses current demographic and statistical data to provide an overview of the daily lived experiences of Afro-Latinos in the United States. It explores the history of Afro-Latinos in the United States, their current social and economic status, and the challenges faced by this community. The workshop also highlights the resilience and strength of Afro-Latinos, their contributions to American society, and concludes with a discussion of how we can all work to create a more just and equitable society for Afro-Latinos.

Blackness in Latin America

Blackness in Latin America is a multifaceted topic. This workshop will provide an overview of Blackness throughout Latin America using historical data and seek to provide a nuanced understanding of that particular history and lived experience. Discussion topics will include the history and impact of slavery and colonialism, the present challenges of racism and discrimination, and the unique contributions and expressions of African descended people. Altogether, the workshop will help define and showcase the development of Black culture and identity in Latin America.

Latino Anti-Blackness

A workshop that focuses on how anti-Blackness manifests itself in Latino communities and what can be done to address it. This discussion begins with the arrival of the first Africans to Latin America in the 15th century and the ways in which anti-Blackness has been perpetuated by colonialism, slavery, and white supremacy. The workshop also highlights the different forms of anti-Blackness within the Latino community, the impact of it, and what can be done to address and change these damaging systems and behaviors.
